July 16 DGR Meeting Recap — We Need you on August 2!

Our July meeting was packed with energy, powerful updates, and one clear call to action: We need all hands on deck for the August 2 Day of Action to elect Chris Shoults in Assembly District 63.

CALL TO ACTION: Day of Action — Saturday, August 2

From 11 AM to 3 PM, we’re teaming up with Riverside County Young Democrats, IE Dems for Equality, and Democrats of Southwest Riverside County to knock doors, phone bank, post signs, and write postcards.

Turnout was just 18.4% in the primary. If Democrats show up — we win.
This is a must-win seat with statewide implications. Let’s get loud, get visible, and get Chris across the finish line.

Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson

We were honored to welcome Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson, who gave a powerful and wide-ranging update on the state of our city. A few key takeaways:

  • Riverside is rising: Now the 12th largest city in California, Riverside is leading the charge in clean and green tech — thanks to partnerships between government, industry, and UCR.

  • Addressing homelessness: Riverside hit functional zero for veteran homelessness and is expanding facilities like Aspire on Fairmount to support aged-out foster youth, mental health, and low-income housing.

  • Public safety with compassion: The Mayor addressed recent challenges facing our city and emphasized quiet, behind-the-scenes work being done with the Diocese, Guatemalan Consulate, and others to get resources to those in need — while protecting our officers.

  • Exciting local projects underway:

    • Civil Rights Walk breaking ground next year

    • Santa Ana River Brewery & Pickleball Courts

    • La Sierra Senior Forums coming up

    • Riverside now designated a Blue Zone City, with support from Kaiser and Molina to help residents live longer, healthier lives

She also reminded us how federal gridlock can hit home — Riverside lost $3M in grants due to the congressional BBB holdup and FEMA delayed our emergency support to Texas floods by 15 hours — until Rep. Takano and Gov. Newsom stepped in.

Chris Shoults — AD63 Candidate

Chris fired up the crowd with a clear message: Turnout wins this race.

  • Only 18.4% of voters showed up in the June primary — and many don’t even know there’s a runoff on August 26.

  • If even a third of Democrats show up, we flip the seat.

  • This isn’t just about AD-63 — winning here helps us fight Chad Bianco and the MAGA agenda.

Chris is endorsed by education, labor, and building trades, but he needs us to help get the word out.

📍 Volunteer to host an event, especially in Ward 2 or Ward 4
📩 Donate to help get Chris on TV
🚪 Commit to canvassing, phone banking, or postcard writing on August 2

We also heard from two inspiring congressional candidates:

  • Abel Chavez (CD-41): Taking on Ken Calvert in the Inland Empire

  • Paula Swift (CA-40): Running to bring real representation to East Orange County

Both are fighting to flip red seats and restore progressive leadership in Congress.
